The Greatest Collaborative Player Development Event Ever

The modern era of baseball demands more than just hard work and talent. It requires a fully aligned performance team working in harmony to protect, progress, and maximize an athlete’s career.

I have been trained to think in this way and apply it to the way I work with players. We need to create collaboration and a team approach, we need to be objective, observe, communicate, execute, and evaluate our plans. 

I held a bunch of roles in Major League Baseball, but my favorite was the Director of Performance Integration.  I had a department of specialized analysts, including our Director of Sales and Pitching Performance, Jordan Oseguera, and we were involved in every department, forming a strategy that required interconnection and a clear focus on the player.  

It wasn’t always smooth. We had obstacles, but this is where I fell in love with arm strength data – it was one of the big pieces of the puzzle in examining fatigue, recovery, central and peripheral nervous system fatigue, and how to optimize a player in a 360-degree fashion.

The Saint James Return Beyond Performance Educational Weekend and Combined Players & Coaches Clinic represents the interconnected approach. This stronger high-performance model has multiple stakeholders learning from us, but also from each other.   The weekend of September 13th and 14th, 2025, at The Saint James is the most collaborative educational event available today, bringing together strength specialists, sports medicine experts, skill coaches, and players under one roof.

Unlike traditional clinics that focus on only one dimension of training, this event bridges the gap across disciplines. The weekend is structured in two phases:

  • Day 1: Dedicated to strength coaches and sports medicine professionals.
  • Day 2: Dedicated to skill coaches and players on a variety of pitching performance aspects with sports medicine and strength professionals integrated to deliver individualized coaching to further player performance and reduce injury risks.

This alignment ensures that every member of the performance team speaks the same language, understands the same data, and can make synchronized programming decisions that reduce injury risk while elevating performance for all.

Separate Yourself from the Pack by Being a Specialist-Generalist

While specialization builds the deep mastery required to contribute uniquely to an athlete’s development, the generalist mindset provides the breadth of knowledge to see how that specialty integrates into the larger performance environment.

In baseball and beyond, being a specialist-generalist means you might have an advanced focus—such as pitching mechanics, strength development, or sports medicine—but you also understand enough about nutrition, recovery, psychology, biomechanics, and workload management to see how all parts of the puzzle fit together.

This wider lens prevents “siloed” thinking, where experts focus narrowly on their craft without considering how their input interacts with the rest of the athlete’s program. By bridging gaps across fields, a specialist-generalist can better communicate with other professionals, anticipate challenges, and design solutions that serve the athlete holistically.

The Performance Team and What They Do 

Too often, we hear, “stay in your lane”, or that a coach feels no connection to sports medicine officials, or sports medicine officials are not aligned with strength coaches – this damages the athlete. 

The ability to understand more about the people you work with and the player that you are all focused on has tremendous advantages:

  1. More collaborative conversations among performance team members occur since a specialist-generalist can “speak the language” of multiple disciplines.
  2. You have a built-in safeguard against confirmation bias—rather than relying solely on their discipline’s traditional methods, specialist-generalists are more open to integrating new research and perspectives. 
  3. It builds credibility with athletes; players value when a coach or expert not only demonstrates mastery in their area but also shows awareness of how other factors, such as workload or mindset, influence performance. Most importantly, this balanced approach ensures that the athlete’s development plan is interconnected, with every decision supporting the larger goal of peak performance, injury resilience, and long-term growth.

A training demonstration from our first Return Beyond Performance Event in Scottsdale, Arizona.  This event was attended by MLB strength coaches, pitching coaches, and sports medicine staff.  This discussion focuses on reactive core contraction and how vibrational training for the core improves reactive deceleration and energy transfer to the throwing arm. 

Background on the Key Stakeholders

You need to understand the roles of the attendees and how they can push the boundaries of player development and injury prevention by working with you as a unit – combined forces in maximizing performance and minimizing risk of injury dominate the game! 

The Sports Medicine Specialist

At the core of athlete protection is the sports medicine specialist. Their role extends beyond injury response — it is about interpreting objective data and clinical findings to diagnose and project the athlete’s condition.  With data and clinical skills, they guide athletes throughout their rehabilitation, set clear benchmarks, and consistently observe changes in muscle, tendon, bone, and ligament function.  Correction of dysfunction is their forte. 

  • Key Observations: Understanding prior injury patterns, overuse factors, and movement histories.
  • Key Objective Approaches: Monitoring current arm strength, range of motion, and asymmetries to detect red flags early.
  • Key Overview: Anticipating risks before they become injuries and guiding return-to-play strategies.

In our first event for sports medicine and strength officials, we took a forward-looking approach that ensures every athlete has a personalized path to durability and recovery.

We integrated key concepts in arm strength and range of motion assessments to optimize and refine protocols, rather than placing athletes in generalized or one-size-fits-all programs.  Our approach is expediting recovery through consistent program evaluation. 

The Strength Specialist

While the medical team safeguards health, the strength specialist is responsible for building the physical foundation that powers performance. Their focus is on:

  • Key Observations:  Strength, speed, and power to improve global qualities.
  • Key Objective Approaches: Enhancing the rate of force development for explosiveness through force-sensing technology that starts from the ground up and fingers down.
  • Key Overview: Developing deceleration capacity to transfer energy through the throwing motion safely.

Strength coaches have a focus on developing lower-body power.  This video segment at our Return Beyond Performance event at VeloU communicates how a change in training methods, or a coaching approach that asks the athlete to shorten their stride length may alter the balance between ground force production (acceleration) and protection (deceleration), the strength coach needs to ensure the athlete can maintain a consistent stride strategy to sustain velocity while reducing the risk of overloading the arm.

An athlete who is neurologically efficient shows blue throughout the app.  However, when we are designing customized throwing programs or making mechanical adjustments, we need to understand how to minimize strength loss even further and adjust our training to avoid overtraining or undertraining of the throwing arm.  Out of the muscles shown, which one would you not overwork post outing? 

The Pitching Specialist

The pitching specialist plays the critical role of converting physical and medical readiness into on-field performance.  They have a tough job as they are on-field, in-game, and have to understand when to push the pedal down, when to idle, or hit the brakes to reduce wear and tear on their high-performance vehicle.  Their expertise lies in:

  • Key Observations: Evaluating the delivery for efficiency and biomechanical risk.
  • Key Objective Approaches:  Designing an optimal workload model that balances intensity and volume and acknowledges changes in throwing arm function.
  • Key Overview:  Design and integrate skill-based drills to improve deception on the mound, ball flight characteristics, command, and sustainable velocity while managing in-game strategic pitching decisions

By tailoring daily and weekly workloads using our decision-making flow charts, having crucial conversations with players about how their arm feels, the pitching coach prevents fatigue-based breakdowns and ensures skill translates into consistent, repeatable performance.

The Player – The Key Driver in Data-Led Player Development

The most important member of the team is the player themselves. For too long, athletes have been passive recipients of training plans. At The Saint James, players are educated to be data-led decision makers — understanding the metrics that govern their arm health and performance.  We are going to bring this to a totally new level. 

In our Players and Coaches Clinic, players are taught how to communicate with their team using strength and range of motion data to determine whether they should:

  • Download: Slight reduction in volume or intensity.
  • Deload: Significant reduction in both intensity and volume.
  • Reload: Increase in either volume or intensity.
  • Overload: Increase in both volume and intensity.

This framework ensures every adjustment has a purpose – you need data to do it correctly.

By learning these principles, players gain the ability to not only take ownership of their careers but also educate their own coaches, many of whom may not yet have this level of knowledge about the throwing arm.

There is more than just the X’s and O’s of technology presented at these events.  It combines all facets of player health and performance with a concentration on being not only a stronger athlete but a better mover.
