Identifying Future MLB Stars: Scouting Based on Elite Performance Habits

Strength in Numbers #107

When I was the Director of Performance Integration with the Los Angeles Angels, I had a unique role in overseeing a new undertaking in amateur scouting.

My mission was to identify prospects who projected high for athletic performance and had a true competitive process for the amateur draft.

Over the years, I’ve come to understand that talent alone isn’t always the best predictor of success. The combination of athletic performance ability and competitive performance habits truly sets apart the next generation of baseball stars.

Throughout my career, I have witnessed that the most exceptional players not only possess elite skills on the field but also demonstrate unwavering dedication to their daily routines and habits.

I am going to shed some insight into how I scouted MLB prospects based on their performance habits in various crucial aspects of their lives, from nutrition to sports psychology, and give you a taste of what’s coming in our comprehensive course to elevate the performance of all baseball players while reducing the risk of injury in the sport.

1. Nutritional Focus

A player’s nutritional intake significantly influences their performance on the field. I closely observe prospects to see if they prioritize a balanced diet, emphasizing the right proportions of macronutrients and micronutrients. Players who show a dedication to consuming wholesome, nutrient-dense foods tend to have higher energy levels, enhanced endurance, and quicker recovery times.

2. Monitoring Focus

Prospects with a monitoring focus understand the importance of tracking their progress. They keep detailed records of their performance, which helps them identify strengths and weaknesses and formulate strategies for improvement. This habit indicates a strong sense of self-awareness and an eagerness to grow as a player while staying on the field.

The ArmCare.com platform is high on my list, as athletes using the system care about their throwing arms and are detailed in individualizing their training and throwing programs to maximize performance and manage fatigue and poor recovery.

3. Training Focus

A dedication to training is a non-negotiable trait for success in professional baseball. The best prospects consistently commit to honing their skills through rigorous training sessions and have more extensive training ages (onset when the athlete first started lifting weights).

I pay close attention to players who display discipline and determination in their training routines, have tremendous single-leg and single-arm strength, have strong trunk qualities, and can jump, as this directly translates to their on-field performance in hitting and pitching. We have a course in preparation that will cover these important training concepts coming soon.

4. Preparation Focus

Preparation is critical to excelling in any competitive sport. Prospects who invest time in studying opponents, analyzing game situations, and strategizing for different scenarios tend to be more mentally prepared for challenges. But take it one step further, they are integrating nutritional strategies such as beet root juice to increase blood flow to the throwing arm. A player with a preparation focus is one who is equipped to make informed decisions under pressure yet does the little things to add to durability.

5. Recovery Focus

Baseball is a physically demanding sport, and recovery is critical to avoiding injuries and maintaining peak performance. Players who prioritize proper rest, post-game recovery routines, and injury prevention exercises demonstrate an understanding of the importance of longevity in their careers.

6. Sports Psychology Focus

This is the most challenging practice for most athletes. Mental resilience is often what separates great players from good ones. Prospects with a sports psychology focus exhibit mental toughness, the ability to handle pressure, and a positive mindset that can turn challenges into opportunities for growth.

7. Sleep Focus

Adequate sleep is the foundation of a player’s overall well-being and performance. I look for prospects who prioritize quality sleep, have sleep strategies such as wearing blue light-blocking lenses to watch screens at night, and recognize its impact on their physical and mental health.

In light of my experiences in scouting, the Major League Performance and Recovery Habits course is comprehensive and focused on cultivating elite performance habits in all key areas of a player’s competitive processes, as mentioned above.

We tailored programs for nutrition, performance monitoring, specialized training, mental conditioning, recovery techniques, sports psychology workshops, and optimizing sleep patterns. We aim to empower players to embrace the same habits that have proven to be instrumental in the success of MLB’s finest and those with the greatest signing bonuses and future in the sport.
